The Porphyry

Porphyry is a particular type of volcanic rock belonging to the "Atesina Porphyry Platform", an enormous complex of volcanic rocks that extends into the Trentino-Alto Adige region. These rocks, extremely varied and differentiated, both as a chemical composition and as a form of formation, are the result of an intense volcanic activity started 260 million years ago in the Permian period, and continued for several million years with a continuous repetition of eruptive phases and stasis phases. Among the various methods of deposition of these rocks, the so-called ignimbrites take on particular importance, as these are the ones that gave rise to the "porphyry". These are flows of liquid-gaseous mixtures with thicknesses generally ranging from 5 to 20 meters and with a fairly constant chemism, up to the so-called ignimbritic unit, which reaches hundreds of meters thick. The currently cultivated porphyry is limited to one of these ignimbritic units (classified as rhyolitic ignimbrite), characterized by vertical cracking and very sharp percussion fracture, indispensable for the processing of "porphyry"; the cultivable thickness, given the lack of stratification is about 100-200 meters.

Tiles splitten and sawn

Used in architecture in the furnishing of historical centers for the paving of squares, streets, arcades and sidewalks. Regular split tiles are obtained by cutting or sawing the stone with special trances for split tiles; for those with sawn sides, diamond discs are used, both are produced in rectangular or square sizes. The thickness is generally variabile between 2 and 6 cm; for particular applications, tiles with higher or thinner thickness, especially suitabile for coatings, can be produced. With normal processing, 10-15-20-25-35-40-45 cm wide and 50 cm wide tiles are produced.

Cubes

They are solid in a cubic shape, obtained by mechanical splitting from the stone and according to the dimensions they are distinguished in 4/6 - 6/8 - 8/10 - 10/12. Stairs

The steps are the workpieces that are obtained from slabs of considerable size, "slabs of saw", having natural quarry tops with variable thicknesses 3-4-5-6 cm. The slabs are then sawed into the desired width, usually 30-33-35-40 cm etc. and the long front rib is evenly thickened. The long front edge can be flamed or split.

They are obtained starting from the by-products of the processing of the tiles, by blanking and finishing by hand of the head. They have two natural lateral hollow sides, the upper head in view and the two split side edges and worked in undercut. The length is running and the width varies between 3 cm and 10 cm. The depth varies between 8 and 13 cm. The weight is about 180/220 kg / sqm. They are supplied in bulk or in boxes.

Kerbs

The retaining walls made of porphyry ashlar (exposed face) are perfectly pleasing and perfectly set with the natural landscape, erasing the unpleasant appearance of the concrete walls. The warm color with various shades, fits in admirably with any architecture; they are very suitable for supporting walls of roads, embankments etc. The porphyry ashlar is produced with height 10-15 cm, 12-20 cm and 15-25 cm, with variable length. Very interesting is the production of veneered facades with recess not higher than 15 cm; it allows the coating of concrete walls, building blocks, pillars etc

Plinths and thresholds for driveways

The thresholds for driveways are elements that perform the function of connecting the dimensions of the roadway to the overlying portions of the sidewalk or access to garages, etc. They are therefore inclined. Given the function and the consequent strong load, the thresholds have safety shims, ranging from 6 to 10 cm. The widths, related to the plinths, are 42 cm and 52 cm, and the lengths to run; the upper surface is natural, while the ribs are cut orsawn. The working process is almost the same as split tiles, as already mentioned. Sometimes they are used as a walkway in dry-laid gardens.
